Lifehacker reader Chris points out that you can actually add in some functionality with third-party apps. We’re fans of the Toshiba FlashAir Wi-FI SD card because it’s cheap and does its job. A few weeks ago I purchased SD card on eBay. It’s a Toshiba Flashair card that allows you to connect to it over wifi and transfer files without having to insert it in the device that you’re transferring from. In the 3D printing community, the Flashair cards are notoriously difficult to configure properly. There are a number of options for ways in which it can be set up, all of which will be covered below.

If you’d like to have a look at the official documentation, then it can all be found. Initial configurationThe first step when you get your card is to update it to the latest firmware. This makes sure that the card will be compatible with the configuration commands that we’ll be entering later on. You can find the firmware updaters at the links below:Editing the configuration fileIf you haven’t already, you’ll want to set your file explorer to show hidden files, and then navigate to the SDWLAN folder on the SD card. Within that folder you’ll see a file named CONFIG. Open that up in any text editor (I found that it doesn’t matter if you use windows CRLF line endings) and delete everything that is already there. There are three ways that you can configure the connection to your SD card – AP mode, STA mode, and Internet pass-thru mode.

AP (Access Point) mode makes the SD card behave like a normal wireless access point, although with no direct internet access. This means that you need to connect to the SD card every time that you want to transfer files, which isn’t really ideal but its the easiest to set up.

STA (Station) mode allows your SD card to act as a LAN client and connect to your existing access point, meaning that you won’t need to change networks when you want to transfer files. This is generally the most desired mode of operation. Internet pass-thru mode allows you to connect to the SD card but also have a connection to the internet at the same time. This isn’t ideal as the card acts as a bridge for all your internet traffic, forwarding it to your access point.

Setting up AP mode: APPMODE=4To set up AP mode, you’ll need to copy the following lines into your CONFIG file. Set your APPSSID to your desired access point name, and your APPNETWORKKEY to your desired access point password by typing them after the equals sign on their respective lines.

At least 8 characters are required for the password.ID=FLASHAIRAPPNAME=flashaircardAPPSSID=APPNETWORKKEY=APPAUTOTIME=0APPMODE=4UPDIR=/UPLOAD=1WEBDAV=2Save the CONFIG file and then eject and re insert your SD card for the changes to take effect. You should see a new wifi network appear with the name that you set to replace “YOURSSID”. Setting up STA mode: APPMODE=5To set up station mode, you’ll need to do a bit more configuration. For this mode your SD card will need to connect to your existing wireless access point, which means its going to need the login information. So in this mode, the APPSSID and APPNETWORKKEY fields need to be set to the SSID and password of your LAN connection.ID=FLASHAIRAPPNAME=flashaircardAPPSSID=APPNETWORKKEY=APPAUTOTIME=0APPMODE=5UPDIR=/UPLOAD=1WEBDAV=2 Setting up Internet pass-thru mode: APPMODE=6Internet pass-thru mode is like a combination of the two previous modes.

The card will act as an access point but will also connect to your existing access point as a client. I tried to use a Toshiba FlashAir W-04 in my Wanhao D4S (Replicator Clone). The machine uses postprocessed X3G format rather than G-Code directly.During my first try to use the card which was an 8h print job, the printer ran a “Z home” command at 99% of the print and ran the printed part into the hotend. I found the printer some time after that with the hotend completely molten into the part and the heaters still at 235 degrees C.

After that, I compared the original file on my Mac with the one on the SD card and it also had become corrupted transferring it via WebDAV. The very last 11 kB of data were incomplete, which means allocated but filled with 0xFF.Like. Hey, awesome write up – thank you!I’ve had quite a few issues getting the FlashAir (W-04) connected but managed to get them ironed out after 2 days of trying 🙂I have copied List.htm and the js folder onto my FlashAir and can bring up the website (using it’s IP) which responds to the card and I can look around it – however, when I click on choose file and select the file – it just says DONE but it doesn’t actually upload it. When I scroll around the card I can see the files and when I manually check the card (on my 3d printer) the file hasn’t uploaded.Hoping you maybe have any ideas?I’m also unable to get the FlashAir to map as a drive as I’m on Mac – I tried finding it and searching “connect server” directly using the IP but have been unable.Any help would be awesome! Thanks, Mark 🙂Like.

I can view the card on Mac OS/Chrome using flashair.local in my browser, but cannot get the upload.cgi to work. I use flashair.local/upload.cgi but get 404 error.

Can anyone help me out?I am using APPMODE=4 instead of 5.Here’s my CONFIG file:VendorCIPATH=/DCIM/100TSB/FA000001.JPGVERSION=FA9CAW3AW3.00.02CID=313647011301PRODUCT=FlashAirVENDOR=TOSHIBAAPPSSID=flashairAPPNETWORKKEY=.DNSMODE=1LOCK=1APPMODE=4APPAUTOTIME=UPLOAD=1UPDIR=/DCIMWEBDAV2Like. I couldn’t reply directly to your last comment, so I’ll just create a new comment and reference yours here:I think I’ve found the problem! In your configuration you’ve changed the appname to ft5flashair. Try typing that into your web browser and see if that works 🙂I will try that once I get back to being able to see the card on my network. I’ve since lost it somehow, and can’t get it back. I’ve re-initialized again and nothing. It’s late here though, and I’ll see what I can come up with tomorrow. Thank you for your patience and your responses!

It truly is helpfulDaveLike. Matt,Back at it again here.I have a Folgertech FT-5, which runs Marlin. I know that I will need to make some edits to Marlin to actually transfer files to the card over wifi. I’ve just been using the SD card adapter on my computer.I have seemed to make a bit of a breakthrough. I have been able to get the card on the network consistently according to angry IP.

However, I still cannot access the card using just the IP address that my router has assigned it, as well as using “APPNAME” which I have gone back to “flashaircard”I however, reach the card with. It brings up the “Success page” and I can browse and submit a file to send to the card.

Hi Matt, This is a great write up, and it’s helped get started. However, I am finding some difficulty when trying to navigate to the card. I am configuring in station mode.

App

My config is essentially what you outline in your station mode walk through. When using angry IP, I can find the card in the active list, however, I cannot navigate to it using either the IP given with angry IP, or when I try to navigate to it using.

I tried to set the card up with it’s own IP, but can’t seem to get it to work, meaning I can’t find it when I scan for the active IP’s on my LAN.One other thing I’ve come across is the Updir that I define shows up after I save the config file, but when I try to navigate locally on the card, the folder/files are unreadable/corrupt. Not sure if this has anything to do with my problems or not.Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,DaveLike.

Hi Matt,Thanks again for your help and your earlier comment and suggestion. An update to my last response.

I was able to re-initialize the card(to the best of my knowledge) I am back to the card coming up in the IP scanner, but unable to navigate to it still. My browser just times out. This time I left updir = /The card doesn’t appear to be corrupt anymore. Still really curious why I can’t get to the flashair page. Here’s my config file:Thank you so much for your help!DaveWLANSDID=FT5FlashairVendorCIPATH=/DCIM/100TSB/FA000001.JPGAPPNAME=FT5FlashairAPPSSID=CenturyLink7402APPNETWORKKEY=.APPAUTOTIME=0APPMODE=5UPDIR=/UPLOAD=1WEBDAV=2CID=333179011301PRODUCT=FlashAirVENDOR=TOSHIBALike.
